Spit-up, Baths & More...

I feel like the luckiest person in the world to have such a cute, sweet, just all around great baby. And the most kind, thoughtful, and loving husband. I would not have made it through the last few weeks without either of them. With that said, we have had some pretty thought provoking times...like how does a baby poop all over the arm of his Dad while getting a diaper change at 3:00am (Yes, he sure has some distance)! I have also never second guessed myself as much as I have in the past few days.

Isaiah has been spitting up ever since he was born; but lately it has become worse. We had increased his food intake, so then we backed it down. We tried what seemed to be everything, including raising him above our heads five times before burping him. (We know. It sounded crazy to us too, but a friend told us that it worked.) We consulted nurses and friends, but nothing seemed to work. Fortunately, Isaiah never seems to be too bothered by any of it, no apparent pain or discomfort. So early this morning we made an early trip to the doctor's office. And never a dull moment because he there peed all over, while getting his diaper changed. The little man turned into a geyser dousing himself, his clothes, and the doctor's table full of homemade fluids. Certainly made for some good laughs as he smiled and smirked his way through the whole thing. As it turns out, little Isaiah has reflux. So now we have some drops for him to take twice a day. Hopefully he will stop spitting up so much. That should cut down on some of the wet and dirty laundry. Not to mention a few less baths which he does not seem to care for at all.

Well as every spare moment that I have goes by way too quickly, this one has come to an end as well. The little man needs to be fed... and judging by the cries he needs to eat NOW!

Pictures will soon follow...

10 Days Later...

Wow, these past 10 days have flown by. It's hard to believe that only two weeks ago our family of three was just a family of two. Now we cannot imagine a world without our little Isaiah. He is truly a miraculous blessing from God. Things have been going so well! Calie and Isaiah came home from the hospital this past Sunday. I was a nervous wreck for the first day or so; I even had to sleep on the floor next to his crib to make sure he was breathing and just in case something went wrong. We no longer had computers keeping track of everything or a floor full of nurses to answer our many questions and keep checking his vitals. Slowly but surely, things have settled down into a routine and we are all doing so great at home. Isaiah has settled into his new "Welcome to the Jungle" room and has taken right to his little play gym and bounce seat. Honestly, things are just so much easier, comfortable and nicer when your in your own home. Calie and I are able to sleep in our own bed and shower in our own bathroom; this alone makes a huge difference! Calie is doing great; you'd never even know she had a c-section. She's looking as beautiful as always and you can already tell that she was made for motherhood!

And now to the little guy, Isaiah David is doing great. And YES, I will try and get some more pictures up ASAP! This little guy is always making cute faces, sounds, stretches, hiccups, and the like. I really need a camera with me 24/7. Plus he just loves to cuddle, which is just fine with the two of us! So now I am knocking on wood as I type this, but we have been so blessed with a good, easy, content baby. He only cries when he has gas or hungry, just like his mother :-) And boy does he sleep! Not really much of a sleeper before 11:00 at night, but after his midnight feeding he sleeps right into about 8:00 in the morning. Of course we wake him every three hours to feed him, but he goes right back to sleep and thereby let's Mom and Dad catch some Zzz's as well. Our only complaint is that when he eats he doesn't like to work for it. That's my boy, he like's his boob booze from the bottle and not the tap. Smart little turkey knows his bottle is not far behind so he becomes a bit restless if he has to put forth too much effort for his meals, lazy little dude. Calie says that's a boy/guy thing...she's just so funny sometimes.

Isaiah also had his first doctor's appointment. Aside from checking his temp in a place where the sun doesn't shine, that went very well too. We really like our Doctor and everything looked great--he's gaining weight (8 lbs, 9 oz), growing (21 inches), and his heart and lungs are healthy! In no time we will be hitting the basketball court, as many nurses have commented on his big feet with his long little toes and fingers. Maybe we have a little NBA player on our hands!

That's all for now. We are doing a family Christmas this weekend with Calie's side of the family. This will be the first time he meets the Seitzer side of the family. Don't tell them this, but when we told Isaiah he was going to meet them all this weekend he started crying. Smart little guy, just kidding!!! But we have a full weekend of fun and family time ahead so we'll no doubt have some new pictures to share by then. Until then, thanks for all the continued prayers, cards, gifts, and well-wishes. May God bless each of you with a wonderful, healthy New Year!

Helloooooooooo World!

Hi everyone, Isaiah here! Thanks to you all for giving me such a warm welcome into this crazy world. I can’t wait to get to meet you all in person. And just so you’re prepared, I really like to cuddle and I’m pretty sure Mom and Dad are OK with that. I have some pretty good news to report. First of all I’m eating and drinking plenty of food on my own—right from the tap! They took the IV out of my arms, no more tubes…boo-yah! I really have to focus on those things and celebrate them right now because at some point today the doctor, who was all nice and chummy with me, is now going to do some snipping around my man parts. Can’t exactly say I’m too thrilled about that!

But now to the best news yet… I get to go home tomorrow! That’s right, on Sunday I am busting out of this joint. And I can’t wait to see my new home, new room, be at home with Mom and Dad, and begin to meet all you wonderful people in person. Thanks again for all your prayers, and please keep them coming! The Big Guy upstairs is pretty awesome, but a few extra prayers never hurts. In fact, you might want to pray that my Daddy would stop gagging whenever he sees my poopy diapers. He’s slowly coming around but I’m afraid one of these days he’s gonna spit up on me!

Oh yeah, there are some new pictures below. Mom and Dad are going a "little" photo crazy with that new camera of theirs. Hey, not that I can blame them though, I did inherit my dad’s stunning good looks and overall cute demeanor. Guess that’s all for now, peace out!

Love ya and see ya soon…

He has arrived!

"Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows." James 1:17

God is so good! Our beautiful, amazing miracle of God has arrived (with a melon head)! The whole thing is still very surreal, just hard to fathom ourselves as Mom & Dad. After a loooooong process, Calie and I welcomed our first-born son into the world at 2:12 am, today on December 31st! He was 8 pounds, 6.7 ounces and measured at 19.5 inches long. Here's a very quick and sketchy rundown so please give us a call if you want all the details! Proud parents always want to share their story!

We arrived at the hospital at 7:00am on December 30th. Calie's water was broke and we began the induction about an hour later. Slowly but surely, Calie became fully dilated. Though only after a visit by her new best friend—the epidural man! At about 10:30pm Calie began three hours of valiant and impressive pushing. Towards the end though the pushing was not enough as our little melon head wedged himself in and was not heading out (pun intended). Nearly 19 hours later, the decision was quickly made to have a C-section and baby Isaiah David Vera was born at 2:12pm.

Now to some of the not-so-fun details... During the course of the pregnancy Calie came down with a fever/infection. Nothing serious, but enough to add an extra bump in the road. As a result baby Isaiah was quickly whisked away to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit after delivery. He wasn’t breathing well enough on his own so they gave him some oxygen tubes. They also had to vacuum out his insides to make sure his inners were cleared out of all meconium (That’s the baby’s first poop. The little guy took his first poop inside of Calie, ha ha ha, and so they just had to make sure none of his wastes got into the lungs, stomach, and such.) He’s still there for now as they are making sure that he is getting enough oxygen, recovering from any infections, and clearing out any bad fluids. The major bummer news was that we had to wait quite awhile before we could hold him as he was being given fluids through tubing in his umbilical cord which causes a need for extra caution. Again, if you want all the specific details give us a call, too much for blogging but we’d love to share.

During Calie’s first visit to see him (nearly 10 hours later), he looked 100-times better. He is the perfect little baby (Which by the way, are the words of the nurses and not mine; no paternal favoritism here!) Skin is pink. Vitals are strong. Has 10 little fingers and 10 little toes. Head is full of curly dark hair and is still shaped like a melon, though not as much anymore. Eyes are blue and cutely cross-eyed. Now he’s breathing the same air as we do. Calie is also doing great; she looks as beautiful as always and is just happy to have the birthing process behind her. By the way, when you see the pictures, just remember it looks a lot worse than it is. Many tubes and wires are on the poor little guy, but they’re just being extra cautious.

Last night we were finally able to see him and hold him (along with Grandma Sue and Grandpa Dave). Isaiah finally stopped being stubborn to the point they were able to put an IV through his arm and remove the umbilical cord one. That was really when it began to sink it and the surreal feelings slowly started to disappear. There was nothing better than to hold him in my arms or to look at Calie holding him. We also tried feeding him for the first time last night, though that didn’t work so well. Perhaps we’ll have better luck later this morning.

After 2 hours of sleep in 40-hour time period, Calie and I crashed long and hard last night. We definitely did not see any New Year’s ball drop! I just got back from seeing him and Calie is getting ready to try and feed him again. Each time we go over there he looks so much better. Isaiah will stay in the NICU unit but is now breathing the same air we are and has only an arm IV to keep him hydrated and nutritioned. There are also a few sensors on him keeping track of body temperature, and other vital signs. He gets better by the hour, and once he becomes a bit more hydrated he’ll be rid of the tubes for good. Poor little guy just needs to pee! As I shared, the Lord is good and things are progressing so well. We are beyond thankful knowing that God’s watchful and compassionate arm is around us.

Calie and I made a special Christmas purchase this year in place of gifts to each other—a fancy, new camera! So with that in mind I have a pretty good feeling that we’ll have plenty more pictures, better pictures and ones without tubes, in the very near future. Thank you all for your many prayers, phone calls, thoughts and emails. Please continue to keep baby Isaiah in your prayers, that all test results would be in and that he’d be well enough to come home with us on Saturday. Thanks for reading, and seriously give us a call at anytime to chat and here about some of the other details.

Oh yeah, concerning his name, both grandpas are named David so the middle name was easy. Because Calie was not able to see the him for eleven hours after the delivery, we held off on giving him a name right away. But once we were in there for the first time as a family, we thought we really couldn’t call him ‘Babyboy Vera’ anymore. So we went through our list of about 4 or 5 names and really liked Isaiah the best. It’s not quite too common and we (by we, I mean Calie) wanted to ensure the name would not be shortened into annoying nicknames. Though cheesy, my fondness for the name stemmed out of my fondness of the book in the Bible—filled with awesome words of vindication and deliverance! The name Isaiah is a Hebrew name in origin and means: “God is my salvation.”

Waiting no more... Welcome Baby Isaiah
